More than $94,000 was given to Seventh-day Adventist academies at the 13th Annual Celebration Weekend for the Alumni Awards Foundation (AAF). On March 7 and 8, leaders and educators from across North America gathered at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona to recognize schools, alumni and teachers who have made a lasting impact on Adventist education.
The prestigious 2008 Academy Award for Excellence, a $25,000 grant awarded annually to one academy, was presented to Glendale Adventist Academy in Glendale, Calif. “To be recognized as one of the premier Adventist schools in North America is wonderful, and I am so proud of our Glendale Adventist Academy teachers, students, alumni and constituency who have helped make our school what it is,” said Principal Glen Baker.
Eleven teachers were selected to receive a 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is given to teachers who have shown untiring dedication in the classroom, and includes a $1,000 cash grant for each recipient.
The Outstanding Alumni Awards were given to two notable individuals who have become leaders in their professions and communities. Greg Constantine, who was recognized for his achievements in the arts, designated his $5,000 grant to benefit Andrews University. Dr. Jim Slater, who has made significant contributions to the field of health science, has designated his grant to benefit La Sierra University.
The conference kicked off with the annual Golf Classic, which awarded over $48,000 in cash prizes to secondary Adventist schools. Weekend festivities included performances by Point of Grace, the Wedgwood, and the Glendale Academy Chorale and Jazz Band.
Over the last 13 years, AAF has given over $1 million to Adventist education. The nonprofit organization seeks to promote quality education by rewarding schools, leaders and educators who have made considerable impacts on the forefront of Adventist education. AAF hosts its annual event each spring.
